Navigating Risk: International Standards in Marine Cargo Assessment and Fraud Investigation for Insurance Surveyors

The Insurance Institute of Nepal Ltd. (IIN) successfully conducted Day 1 of the technical training program titled “Best Global Practices: Marine Cargo, Project Cargo & Maritime Fraud Technical Training” on 2082/08/04 at Narayanchaur, Naxal, Kathmandu. The session was exclusively designed for Insurance Surveyors, with a total of 10 participants.

As Nepal’s imports of machinery, industrial supplies, project equipment, and containerized cargo continue to grow, the complexity of marine cargo risks has also increased. To address this, IIN brought in an International Resource Person, Captain Mukesh Gautama, Advisor at Wilson Surveyors and Adjusters Pvt. Ltd., India, to deliver global insights and practical case-based learning.

Opening Ceremony

The program was inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Laxmi Kanta Paudel, CEO, IIN, who highlighted the importance of enhancing Nepal’s technical capacity to align with global standards in underwriting, claims handling, survey practices, and fraud detection.

Training Highlights

Participants received hands-on exposure to:

  • Container & Cargo Claims
  • Project Cargo & Risk Management
  • Cargo Insurance Frauds

The sessions emphasized practical investigation skills, documentation standards, recovery mechanisms, and red-flag identification in fraud cases.

  • Strengthened understanding of complex cargo loss assessments.
  • Improved capability to evaluate documents, validate claims, and identify fraud indicators.
  • Enhanced coordination between surveyors, underwriting, and claims teams.
  • Greater confidence in applying global best practices to Nepal’s context.

Certificates were awarded by Captain Mukesh Gautama, followed by a group photograph marking the successful completion of Day 1.
